Horse SoundsHorses are beautiful animals, and whether you ride one, own one, or just really love them, it’s important to know about the different sounds that they make. Horse sounds vary depending on what the animal is trying to convey. Believe it or not, horses make different noises in order to attempt to communicate, either to each other or to a human. The different horse sounds can give us better insight into what our horse is thinking. Sighing is a common noise made by horses, and in many cases it is very close to the same reason that we humans sigh. If a horse feels relieved, it might sigh in a long, drawn out tone. It also may sigh if it feels bored or overworked. Another common sound horses make is neighing. A neigh usually signals that the horse is feeling confident and wants to communicate with its owner. In some cases however, a neigh may be a sign of stress, so it’s important to learn the different neighs that your horse makes.
Horse sounds are much more complex than some people may imagine. These animals are very close to dogs in the respect that they are very intelligent, and use a system of sounds to try and get their feelings or needs across. Veterinarians have studied horse sounds and realized that there are ways for us as humans to react to these sounds in order to help the horse, or to train it. For example, if the horse makes a “blowing” sound out of its nose, it more than likely means that it is feeling restless and anxious. In this case, it may attempt to make an unexpected move. There are training methods, which can be used in this situation in order to calm the animal down. Believe it or not, many horses can be trained to listen to vocal commands! Paying attention to the different sounds that horses make can be an important part of getting to know your horse and learning how to tend to its needs. |
