Dog Sounds

Our furry friend, the dog, can produce sounds in all kinds of different ranges. The barks that man’s best friend produces can range from high pitched to very deep, depending on not only the breed of dog, but the emotions that that particular dog is trying to convey. For example, a small poodle or Chihuahua will probably sound much different from a German shepherd or a pit bull. Dog sounds are not just limited to the traditional bark. Many dogs, especially wild ones such as wolves and coyotes howl into the night as well. These sounds are often associated with the wilderness or desert, which can have a very calming effect. For those who study canines, dog sounds are important to the understanding in their behavior. Many different sounds can be produced by dogs such as growling, whining, or playful whimpering. Each of these sounds contributes to a better knowledge of dog’s mannerisms and actions.

Believe it or not, Americans consider a typical bark to be a “woof,” but in other countries they name the bark other sounds such as “hau hau” in Poland, and “vov” in Danish, to name a few. This proves that the dog sounds that are made are subject to interpretation, and are not necessarily perceived the same around the world. The fascination with dog sounds is usually related to the love people have of the animal. These sounds can be found online as downloadable files, or purchased as a CD with various clips of sounds that they make. It is interesting to note that different breeds of dogs can make very different sounds, almost like humans sound different in our progressive stages of aging, ethic backgrounds, and other factors. People’s love for dogs has made the attraction to the sounds they make a part of the wonder that is man’s best friend.
